Well done

I thought the mini flag on my burger was an apt sign to conclude the night, when earlier in the day I finished my last ever exam paper for my undergraduate degree.

The paper ended at 1.10pm, returned my library book, paid fines, returned locker keys, recieved deposit, went out for lunch with coursemates, returned to the jcr for pizza leavers party and got a lsop mug, went home, went to get solution to declog completely clogged sink, went for dinner at Byron's down the street, finally after passing by it umpteen times and remembering my friend's recommendation of it.

Its a hip, causal place with nice, friendly staff. No frills, just burger. I must confessed I had the many images of burgers from seto ayumi's instagram stuck in my head (that girl seriously eats it for every meal) when I walked into this place.

Now at 2.20am, I'm exhausted, from the day, the thought of all the things I have to do before I leave London in 2-3weeks, and from the gravity of what this day means for me, the end of 4 years studying abroad, whose impact is immense and no doubt changed part of me and the course of my life forever, from the moment I took the flight here, at 19 years old of age, to the person I am now, typing this at nearly 23.

P.s. the 3pounds sink deblocker solution when dumped down the sink, caused the previously stale stink water to go glug-a-glugging down the sinkhole in 2mins, as if it was never blocked in the first place, the only sign being the scent of chlorine in the air. Now if only I can dump a bottle of solution on every problem and it just melts magically away....

I need sleep. goodnight. My summer awaits.

2 weeks, 3 papers, freedom! / Memories of Animeskies.

till then, i need to concentrate!!

Recently I did a search for my old anime graphics design website "Animeskies" and ended up on tumblr with tons of pretty pictures like the one above with the hashtag. It was a good decade ago when it was popular (or at least I think it was more so then, or perhaps it was just me who got out of it) to go to graphics sites to get your layouts (found one submission!) blogskins, neopet profile design (called lookups), wallpapers, animation sprites, downloaded calenders, midis, japanese lessons (someone kept a copy of some translations), photoshop tutorials, manga drawing tutorials etc, and such sites even give each other "awards" which are like graphics you can display on your site with an awarded title.
Like this :P I gave out awards too! Essentially, sites ask you to judge them and you decide the category they receive  X)
Sigh nostalgia. Gone were the heydays! Haha, it was such a teenagish hobby all conjured up with photoshop and dreamweaver and ftps etc. That was around the time when the internet started taking off. I wasn't born into this millenium. u.u

We (I had a team of contributers! Friends, classmates) actually had a good amount of hits too! I had to deal with bandwidth problems and looking for hosts. Started off from angelfire, then to freewebs, then to  Jennifer who hosted us at our last address (animeskies.endlessrain.org) . I actually found an analysis of the website. There were the people back then who frequently comment on tagboards/chatboxes. But I guess now those individual design sites are superseeded by tumblr etc where people post their works directly onto the sharing sites. Oh man, I'm starting to feel old enough for reminscing! The little details from those few years are coming back to me now that I start looking at these things again. Its amazing how much you forget with time. Its only when you look back that you see the things that have changed. My writing 10 years ago was terrible lol. To be fair the graphic designs were very basic too! lol. Teenage hobbies.

Some screenshots of the oldest layouts (yes, it was fashionable to change layouts to version 1.0, 2.0 etc X) )

I don't have a screenshot of the last ever one. :( I could go on forever, but I've been distracted long enough today with 3 days to the exams so... Better get my butt off non-related tabs. :(

Haha, I'll end off with a blinkie from then as seen in the screenshot above! :p Till freedom!

4th year's leaver's dinner

Had dinner at Royal Dragon Chinese restaurant in London's Chinatown yesterday with fellow Chinese course mates in my University's Chinese Society. It was the last event of the year, the leavers dinner which basically is a farewell for the year fours who are graduating this year aka. me. This year's committee was really good and the event was a nice gathering pre-exams. It's also another reminder that we will all part ways soon after. Since most of us are international students, for the past few years we've been somewhat like a mini family? Though over time everyone gets more busy with their own lives and activities and we see less of each other. I guess this is a natural transition in society where people gather and separate  But the memories remain and that's all it matters.

昨日の晩はチャイニーズ社会の最後の晩御飯イベントです。

On this night in the candlelight, I wonder what everyone's wishing for?

Last night of Easter break at home

In 8 hours i'll be on the plane out of lovely Singapore back to London again. Spend my last day with the parents in the day and best friends on a 90min cruise at Boat Asia 2013 around Sentosa and the coast of Singapore in the evening. It was really a wonderful time and I'm really sad to leave. But knowing this is the last time I'm flying back for studies and 2, 3 months will past really soon, I guess this parting is very temporary.

Besties of 10 years

Looking out to the sea at night away from the hustle and bustle of the main island easily puts one into a reflective mood. On this night I wish for everyone in Singapore that I care for the best of health and luck for whatever they have to face in this few months until I come back and to spend my time with them again.

Wait for me!

I miss Sweden.

Its been just over a year since I started my 3 months research project (ERASMUS) in Uppsala, Sweden, and I miss it alot. From time to time I'll think about the little town, the beautiful scenery, the Biomedical center (BMC) of the university, how I used to bike around the town and to university, shopping at ICA, buying jordgubbar (strawberries) from stands when they came into season, visiting IKEA in its origin country where everyone seems unable to escape from having at least a few IKEA items in their house, being where Carl Linneas was once (his house, garden), frequent fikas in university and around town, feeling lucky to have great tasting water just out of the tap, having a nice big room with my own toilet for rent cheaper than London's with a view, the pretty cemetery near halls whose trees surprisingly revealed themselves to be cherry blossom trees in spring, getting addicted to eating kanelbullar (cinnamon rolls), kladdkaka and even their frozen salmon tastes particularly flavourful. The dinners where they burst into song randomly and have table competitions and singing on chairs.

Awesome supervisors and great project results giving me an 80%(!) and such an easy time presenting and writing the report because it was fun and not mundane at all. Not to mention the department I was in was great fun with really nice mix of people and beautiful plants lining the hallway and a homely feel. I like how everyone brings their own lunch and heat them up on one of the many, many microwaves available. I still have my sturdy red IKEA lunchbox. The canteen food is awesome compared to LSOP's. Even spending time in the lab was fun cause I liked what I was doing (biotech and PCR), and listening to the radio that has the same few songs which grew on me.

The times we spent exploring town, visiting the lake, eating at every single Indian restaurant in the town (there were only 3). Going to the nations and their club nights. So many nations with their own houses scattered around town like fraternities in the US which UCL lacks (london space constraints...). They hire students to work there and they prepare awesome brunches on certain days. Awesome festivals like VALBORG DAY, which was massive and surreal cause the whole town's out and celebrating. I miss the pretty river and cathedral, we even went down the river in a boating race which ended in epic fail when we clung/got stuck on the safety rope adjacent to the river flow for what seemed like an eternity. Meeting all sorts of awesome people from different countries, watching eurovision and being excited about it (Sweden won this year). The witnessing the amazingly transition from winter to spring with just enough snow and cold days while escaping the harsh winter. I still miss biking in the bike friendly town. There's no overcrowding, intense competition, the standard of living is high, and English gets you by well enough. I went with good friends, and met more great ones who brought us around.

Of course sometimes my memory fails, such as when friends from Sweden came to visit, I realized I forgot even how to say Yes, No, Hi, Bye, Thank you in Swedish then.

Its just a little rant i had to write because I have such a great wave of nostalgia right now, which was brought about when I saw videos I recorded of the place when clearing out my camera. There is nothing like videos to jot memories compared to photos. We might not look at videos as often, but they tell a great deal more. With the sounds recorded, closing your eyes can transport you back there. I've traveled to many countries during these few years, but there is nothing like falling in love with a place after you've lived there for a while (though arguably I lived during its best time/season). I don't know if I liked London   more or less in the first few months I was here. Perhaps not as much actually, though it still is a pretty awesome well-rounded city.

Come to think of it, I'll be graduating in 2-3months time and saying goodbye to a life I've known for 4 years to return to Singapore. I guess I would be even more nostalgic and sad then now. Flying so often in the past few years became something I got used to (yadda yadda 14hours flight..feels as routine as taking a long bus trip), and to think it was something my younger self would never imagine doing since we rarely go on long haul trips. Studying overseas has given me so many memories, so many experiences, so much independence. I've probably learnt more than I would have if I stayed in Singapore. It was indeed a life changing experience I'm very greatful for. Thinking back I wished I had chronicled alot more of my time overseas so that if I ever forget I can come back to the memories which are only as existent as the lifespan of your neurons. Ideally I would want to do a photolog to accompany this post, but its a little late now and I'm tired lol. So imma put this off. XD So this is why I didn't have regular postings huh.

I'll end off with a random selection of photos in roughly chronogical order. I'm missing alot of photos which I'm hoping its cause I cut it to my hard drive and not that its lost forever!
